Hounds
Morning gents, I’ve been reading this site for ages now and I know a lot of you love ya dogs so I’m after some opinions please. (Apologies if this has been done to death.)
I’m looking to get a Medium to Large size dog ideally with a protective instinct. By that I don’t mean it has to be a trained guard dog, what I mean is I work a lot of nights and would like to know that if anyone breaks into my house the dog will try to see em off and maybe look after my old lady. So ideally not a Lab as I’ve read they are way too friendly to be protective.
Has anyone had any experience with owning a Rhodesian Ridgeback or been around someone that has?
Both the missus and I are used to being around dogs but neither of us has ever owned this breed.
Obviously I’ve read up online but was after any first hand experiences you can offer.

Up for suggestions regarding other breeds too but nothing that drools and preferably a breed that sheds less than the GSD.

Cheers in advance….

A GSD should always be your first choice. Get a short haired version and brush the poor fucker regularly.

However, if you really are more concerned about extra housework over the safety of your family and possessions consider a Doberman.

Re: Hounds
My Parents had a few Lurchers over the years, (Deerhound crossed with a Collie) all from the rescue, intelligent, lovely natured and quiet dogs, but also no nonsense if you get an intruder or someone comes on your property, whenever they had a pushy type at the door or anyone strange around the place the dog seemed to sense it and would stand its ground and just stare at them with a low growl, they left sharpish every time, my Mum reckons the dog would have had them at the slightest move towards her, was uncanny but the dog would sense nervousness in my Mum and that would trigger the protectiveness, if someone she knew came to the house but the dog had never met them before, the dog wouldn’t bat and eyelid at them, had 2 lurchers both at different times and both were like this.

The only downside with lurchers is pikeys like them, so don’t take it for a walk looking too scruffy!

Do yourself and a dog a favour though, whatever you get see if the rescue has something that fits your needs, often find they will know the dogs inside out and if your not fussy about pedigree etc then you get a fully vaccinated and health and temperament tested hound for a fraction of the cost a breeder charges.

Agree about Doberman. Not the brightest dog, but incredible loyal and loving. And guaranteed to scare the shit out of any potential intruder.

Totally agree about getting a rescue dog, if possible.

No, but I know someone who has some wonderful anecdotes about his black lab.

Re: Hounds
My wife and daughter run a doggy day care business, and a ridgeback would be a handful that needs lots of walking and work. Will eat you out of house and home. Lurchers are good protective dogs and need a lot less work and will be very protective etc. The same goes for a Doberman but needs two three walks a day. Whatever the breed, you have to train it, and often rescue dogs can be very needy and nervous, so do your homework thoroughly. Others to consider are Gerrman Shepherds and Duck Tolling Retrievers which what we have. Smaller and can be trained to do exactly what you want. Ours go apeshit if anything comes up the drive. On balance I'd go for a Doberman.

From experience, Boxer, short haired perfect temperament around family. Big enough and strong enough

Get a rescue dog, there's thousands of all sorts of dogs who need rehoming. We got a lurcher years ago, lovely natured dog but looked fearsome.

Mine is extremely protective of our home and garden... he's fine once I have invited whoever is at the door, gate in but otherwise he's a whole load of noise... few years back I crept in and stuck a balaclava on just to see what his response was... have to say I have seen my hound in a different light at his response... he is a field trial Lab rather than your Show labs so that makes a big difference... he also Hates Nazis and the KKK and can sniff them out...

GSD is a good shout, I'd personally go for a rottweiler though.

Great family pets, and only a complete fucking idiot would take one on.

Bloke I know had 2 Rotties and got robbed... he was not best pleased ... they are as soft as Marshmallows mind you....

Dobbies and GSD's are great guard dogs but need shed loads of exercise... if you can't get them out they'll go schizo and chew your TV and after they done with that they'll chew your face off

Re: Hounds
You're better off with a small yapping dog, something like a Jack Russell, over some big softy. You'll find that burglars are not afraid of dogs, but they are afraid of noise.

Boxers are great dogs. Very loyal, friendly and kind.

Will definitely raise the alarm should someone come knocking in the night.

Mad as a march hare mind you. Family one is 8 now and still pretty much a puppy.
